Using SolarWinds Orion Network Tools to Thwart Malicious DOS Attacks

Using SolarWinds Orion Network Tools to Thwart Malicious DOS Attacks

SolarWinds Orion network tools can make network administrators feel like they’re sitting in the command seat of the Enterprise with a host of network tools and applications at their fingertips. Unfortunately, you may not know how to use half of them. This means that you could be doing your job inefficiently, or worse, not making use of SolarWinds Orion network tools that could safeguard your network.

You and your knowledge of SolarWinds Orion network tools could be the only things standing between your company and vicious computer attacks that can cripple your system and ability to do business.

You can use your SolarWinds Orion network tools to take care of a variety of problems, from isolating an infected computer to thwarting DOS attacks. Orion NetFlow Traffic Analyzer helps you easily identify both outgoing and incoming traffic. This capability becomes ever more important as corporate networks are exposed to increasingly malicious DOS attacks.

Consider the following scenario:

1) The Problem Arises

You receive a page from Orion NPM. Your router is having trouble linking out to the Internet and maintaining a stable connection. Considering the amount of business your company does online, this is troublesome.

2) Finding the Problem

You open the Orion NPM Web Console and start investigating the possible issues. All your connections are currently up and bandwidth utilization looks good, so those aren’t causing the problem. Then you notice your CPU utilization on the firewall. It’s holding steady between 99 percent and 100 percent, which is more than twice the normal utilization. This is illogical.

You open the firewall node and begin to drill into the interfaces. On the NetFlow Traffic Analyzer tab, you take a quick look at the top 50 endpoints. The top six computers attempting to access your network are from overseas. You realize your network is being portscanned and your firewall is interactively blocking these attacks. The shields are holding… for now.

3) Resolving the Issue

You push a new configuration to your firewall using Cirrus Configuration Manager that blocks all traffic over the IP range that is attempting to access your network. In minutes, your CPU utilization drops back to its optimal range. Systems are returning to normal.

With SolarWinds Orion network tools, managing your network doesn’t have to require a degree in nuclear physics. Your network tools may even have features you don’t know about. Regular training is necessary to ensure that you can do your job quickly, efficiently, and with as few headaches as possible.

Don’t rely on trial and error to help you figure out the best way to use your network tools. The security of your network could be at stake. For more information about using your Solarwinds Orion network tools, visit Corona Technical Services online at http://www.coronaservices.net.

What to Look for in a SolarWinds Training Provider

What to Look for in a SolarWinds Training Provider

As the network administrator, you are responsible for keeping the gears of your company running. Every computer, router and cable is part of your domain. However, if you’re not managing that domain efficiently, then you’re costing both you and your company a lot of time and money.

Your boss probably thinks that software just magically installs on computers and works perfectly the first time, but you know better. Any idiot can get their software working at 50 percent capacity. But to truly get the most out of any software, specific training is necessary.

Without training, you could have things running with a few bumps and jolts. But with training, you would be utilizing every feature of your software, and everything would be running smoothly and efficiently. You wouldn’t pull your hair out every time a problem arose.

Little mistakes can create major problems. With proper network software training, you greatly reduce the chance of mistakes. Here are some things to look for when you’re searching for a SolarWinds Orion network training provider.

1) How large are the classes?

Just like in college, the smaller the class, the better. Smaller classes mean fewer people competing for your instructor’s attention and more of a chance to get hands-on knowledge of the software. You’ll be able to get individualized attention, with somebody there to answer all the questions you have. This isn’t the kind of training that you can get from a book.

2) How knowledgeable are the trainers?

When you’re going to SolarWinds network training, it’s important to know that your trainers understand 100 percent of the software. Feel free to ask them what kind of training and certification courses they’ve had for SolarWinds products. The best trainers will understand all the capabilities that SolarWinds software provides, so they can pass that knowledge on to you.

3) Is there one-on-one training available?

Sometimes it’s difficult to glean everything you need from classes, even if they’re smaller ones. See if your training provider offers one-on-one SolarWinds training after the classes. They should, in order to make sure that you understand everything you’ve learned in the class. If they offer no chance for you to have one-on-one training, then it’s best to look elsewhere.

4) Do they also have on-site training?

There are times when it’s just not possible for you to take off from work for a few days in order to get software training. This is when it’s important that your SolarWinds training provider comes to you. With on-site training, you’re training on your own network, with a SolarWinds expert right beside you, showing you how software solutions correspond to real-world problems. They should also help you set up your network, if you need it.

Without a complete working knowledge of your SolarWinds Orion software, you’re only half the network administrator you should be. Complete network training from a knowledgeable instructor is the only way you can get to know the software 100 percent. Don’t let little mistakes cost you. Start looking for proper SolarWinds network training today.

SolarWinds Orion Training – Stay On Top Of Your Network Management Software

SolarWinds Orion Training – Stay On Top Of Your Network Management Software

Technology changes at the speed of light. Stay ahead of the game with regular network training to keep your skills in top form.

According to the Gartner Group, an untrained user can take up to six times longer to perform the same task as a trained user. For a network administrator, this inefficiency costs your company in terms of downtime, network security, and resource management.

Don’t operate your network at a sixth of its true capacity. With SolarWinds software training you can:

- Learn your SolarWinds Orion software intimately.

- Learn unique shortcuts that maximize your efficiency.

- Identify network problems before they escalate.

- Resolve network problems faster.

- Save your company both time and money.

- Increase your value as an employee.

- Pass on your new knowledge to others, increasing the efficiency of your whole department.

With network management, it’s never been about who you know. It’s always about what you know, and how well you use it. And when it comes to software, you’ll never exploit the full capabilities just by taking it out of the box.

Corona Technical Services Helps Customer Make the Most of SolarWinds Systems

Corona Technical Services Helps Customer Make the Most of SolarWinds Systems

When Belize Telemedia Limited needed help with their SolarWinds products, they turned to Corona Technical Services. Corona helped them increase their knowledge base so they could get the most out of their SolarWinds software.

TULSA, Okla. (PRWEB) February 12, 2008 — When Belize Telemedia Limited needed help with their SolarWinds products, they turned to Corona Technical Services. Corona helped customize their networking tools and train them to utilize the full potential of their SolarWinds software.

“They were having numerous issues related to the functionality of several SolarWinds products,” said Brett Organ, network trainer for Corona Technical Services. “They had issues with the visibility of wireless access points, and they’d suspended the use of NetFlow Traffic Monitor due to handling difficulties.”

BTL was using Orion Network Performance Monitor, NetFlow Traffic Monitor and Wireless Monitor. Aside from their issues with NetFlow and the visibility of access points, they also needed to design custom pollers and specialized reports and alerts.

Corona came in to help BTL configure the NetFlow Traffic Monitor, and designed important reports and alerts that had not been implemented previously. They also configured custom pollers to collect data on numerous properties of critical network elements.

“We also provided training on the basic functionality of Orion and NetFlow to the BTL personnel that were new to the products,” said Organ.

Malcolm Antonio, a network technician at the Network Operations Center for Belize Telemedia Limited, said that one of the major goals of the company was to learn how to monitor temperature status on some key core routers located in their metro area.

“These improvements allowed us to have real-time monitoring of our core and other devices,” said Antonio. “Hence, we can have quick response when something out of the ordinary happens on the network, thus improving our customer ’service’ satisfaction.”

Antonio was also impressed with the training that Corona Technical Services provided them.

“The Corona team did a wonderful job in training and further working with us to gain this knowledge (of how to handle the SolarWinds software),” Antonio said. “I was surprised at how personal they treated our issues, and the enthusiasm that the trainers showed when dealing with them was impressive.”

Enrollment for SolarWinds Certified Training Courses Open to Network Administrators

Enrollment for SolarWinds Certified Training Courses Open to Network Administrators

Network administrators can now join classes for SolarWinds network software with Corona Technical Services, the only authorized SolarWinds software training partner in for North America.

TULSA, Okla. (PRWEB) Nov. 14, 2007 — Network administrators who need to learn more about their SolarWinds products can now turn to Corona Technical Services, the only authorized SolarWinds software training partner in for North America.

“So many people just spend their time worrying about keeping the network running, not finding out what all the software can actually do,” said Stacey Crow of Corona Technical Services. “As a result, they don’t know what capabilities the software has to make their jobs easier.”

Corona Technical Services is offering training courses for administrators looking to get more out of their networks with SolarWinds software and Orion systems. According to Crow, many administrators aren’t utilizing the full capabilities of their SolarWinds network software.

“People are only using about a tenth of the features of an Orion system,” said Alan Holt. “They don’t have time to learn how the software works, and that’s where we come in. We know the SolarWinds software better than anyone else, and we can show people all the product’s features and how to use them.”

The three-and-a-half day course teaches students to effectively plan and install an Orion system, and harness the advanced features of their SolarWinds network management software. Topics include administering user access permissions and establishing thresholds and filters for the alarming features to allow the most efficient use of resources. The course also covers populating network segments, devices and nodes to be run by Orion.

“If you don’t fully understand the software you’re using, you may be making mistakes that you don’t even know about,” said Holt. “And those little mistakes can cause big problems down the line.”

Incorrect SolarWinds software setup can cost companies significant amounts of time and money. For example, if a server goes down that isn’t connected to the program, that server could be costing companies money without them realizing it.

“If a server hosting your website goes down, online purchases may be taking forever,” said Crow. “You’ll get customers abandoning purchases and you won’t know why. We’re here to help you learn the ins and outs of the system from day one, so that you never have those problems.”

What to Look for in a SolarWinds Training Provider

What to Look for in a SolarWinds Training Provider

As the network administrator, you are responsible for keeping the gears of your company’s network running. Every computer, router and cable is part of your domain. However, if you’re having difficulty managing that domain efficiently, it is costing both you and your company a lot of time and money.

You know that software must be installed and configured correctly and that doesn’t happen perfectly the first time and sometimes not after several attempts.  It’s one thing to get software working at 50 percent capacity. However to truly get the most out of any software, specific product training can be necessary.

Without training, you can have things running with just a few bumps, jolts and delays. However with training, you can be utilizing every feature of your software. As you know effective installation of the software allows you to take advantage of its capabilities for a smother functioning network. You would be able to manage problems and be proactive with their resolution before a crisis develops.

Little mistakes can create major problems. With proper network software training, you greatly reduce the chance of mistakes. However, not all software trainers are created equal. If you’re not careful in choosing where you go, you end up wasting a lot of time and money on a course that doesn’t teach you anything you didn’t already know. Here are a few things to avoid when you’re looking for a SolarWinds training provider.

1) Avoid large classes for optimum SolarWinds training

Do you remember those general education courses in college, like Psychology 101 or General Biology or American History from 1607-1799? Those auditorium-sized classrooms held hundreds of students and only one teacher. You were merely a face in the crowd. You couldn’t get individual attention during class time. Most of what you learned, you had to learn on your own.

When it comes to SolarWinds training, large classes are a big no-no. When you’re trying to learn all the features, shortcuts and quirks of software, it’s detrimental to be sitting in a crowd. You’ll be less likely to get the instructor’s attention for any length of time, and getting help is difficult when you are practicing with the software.

With small classes, fewer people will be competing for your instructor’s attention and you’ll have a better chance of getting to use the software with the Instructors help. You’ll be able to get individualized attention, with somebody there to answer all the questions you have. This isn’t the kind of training that you can get from a book or a large lecture hall.

2) Don’t waste time with untrained trainers

Imagine taking a seat the first day of your SolarWinds training course and being ready to soak up all you can about the software. Your instructor gets up and starts to speak, and ten minutes into the class, you’re convinced that you know more about the software than he does.

It should go without saying that inexperienced trainers will hurt you more than help you. To say it will make your time at the course a complete waste is an understatement. If you’re spending time and money on a training course, you deserve to be taught.

3) Move on if they don’t have individual SolarWinds training

Sometimes it’s difficult to glean everything you need from classes, even if they’re smaller ones. One-on-one training is an important service for a SolarWinds network training provider to offer their clients.

Their goal should be to teach you everything they know about the software so that you’re operating as good as you can be.  If they don’t offer one-on-one training, then they are impeding that goal. Look around until you find a training provider that does offer one-on-one training.

4) No on-site training

There are times when it’s just not possible for you to take off from work for a few days in order to get software training. This is when it’s important that your SolarWinds training provider comes to you. A training provider that isn’t willing to do this isn’t concerned with making sure you get the most out of your SolarWinds software.

With on-site training, you can be training on your own network, with a SolarWinds expert right beside you, showing you how software solutions correspond to real-world problems. They should also help you set up your network, if you need it. If the training providers you are researching don’t offer on-site training, move along.

With a complete practical and working knowledge of your SolarWinds software you can take advantage of the powerful Solarwinds software tools.  Don’t let little mistakes cost you. Start looking for proper SolarWinds network training today.
